Teaching Awards

Education is a primary mission of the School of Medicine, and the realization of this mission depends on dedicated faculty who provide instruction with excellence to over 600 medical students. This Teaching Awards webpage is designed to share the news of faculty who have been recognized by students or their peers in the School of Medicine and the institution or through discipline- or specialty-specific organizations as exhibiting excellence in teaching.

Nelson Order

The Nelson Order honors our institution's best teachers, as selected by students, by their peers and recommended by the deans of their respective schools. All six schools are given the opportunity to nominate the best of the best to be recognized as part of the Norman C. Nelson Order on an annual basis.

Trailblazer Award for Excellence in Medical Student Education

The Trailblazer Award for Excellence in Medical Student Education recognizes our faculty's time and effort devoted to educating future physicians. Nominated by their peers, recipients of the award are recognized as effective teachers who engage, inspire, and mentor learners, demonstrate teaching innovations in curriculum design, and serve as a catalyst for enhancing teaching and learning.

Regions Bank TEACH Prize

Initiated in 2013, the Regions Bank TEACH (Toward Educational Advancement in Care and Health) Prize celebrates the highest qualities of our teaching faculty. The winner receives a cash award of $10,000 and recognition at the luncheon honoring Nelson Order inductees.

Evers Society

The Carl G. Evers, MD, Society was established in the School of Medicine as an honorary and service organization. It is composed of medical students from all four years, each elected by the members of his or her class. Professor of the Year Awards are presented to an M1, M2, M3, and M4 professor at a ceremony each year.

Arnold P. Gold Foundation Humanism and Excellence in Teaching Award

The Humanism and Excellence in Teaching Award recognizes outstanding humanistic teaching residents as identified by their students. Third year medical students select up to six residents to receive The Arnold P. Gold Foundation Humanism and Excellence in Teaching Award, based on their exceptional teaching skills and commitment to the compassionate treatment of patients and families, students and colleagues.
